Test your skills of deduction with the April 2023 edition of Riddle Me This: Coffee, Tea or…?
Friends Maddie, Carmen, Dean, Holly and Dennis found a new café that had just opened a few weeks ago and decided to try it out.
Each wore a different-colored T-shirt (black, blue, green, orange, and red). Each friend ordered a different drink (espresso, latte, cappuccino, macchiato, and tea).
- The person who wore the red shirt ordered the latte.
- Carmen had the cappuccino.
- Dean wore the blue T-shirt.
- Dennis did not order the macchiato.
- The person with the orange T-shirt ordered the macchiato.
- Maddie wore the green T-shirt.
- Maddie did not order the espresso.
What color T-shirt did each person wear and what drink did each one order?

We start with Maddie wearing Green and Dean wearing Blue.
For Dennis, there are three colors left. He can’t have worn orange because he did not order the macchiato. Since Carmen ordered the Cappuccino, and the person in red ordered the latte, the only option for him is Red.
Since Carmen ordered the Capuccino, then the only option left for the Orange is Holly.
Then lastly (because the only color left), Carmen wore the black.
I drew a matrix of Person, Shirt, and Drink and filled in the facts from 1, 2, 3, 5, and 6. Using the additional statements of exclusion for Dennis and Maddie in 4 and 7, I was able to fill in the remaining blanks.
