I believe the answer to the first question about resistors is wrong. Resistors in series divide the voltage proportionally. Unless the total resistance was infinite there would still be some current flowing and thus some power being dissipated.
I strongly disagree with the Correct Responses offered for questions 1 and 2 in this month’s Are You Smarter than an Undergraduate. For Q 1, the correct response should be “divide the voltage proportionally”. “Reducing the power to zero” can only be accomplished with an open circuit; “dividing the current proportionally” is accomplished with parallel resistors; and passive resistors will never increase the source voltage. For Q 2, steel is an alloy of iron and carbon and generally has low corrosion resistance by itself. Steel with improved corrosion resistance is generally known as stainless steel. The primary element added to make steel stainless is Chromium. There are many types of stainless steel with varying amounts of Chromium and smaller amounts of other elements. Carbon is still an ingredient in stainless steel. Other elements are added to modify other properties, including Manganese
I do believe the answer to #1 is incorrect. What do you mean by “reduce” the power? P=IR. R would seem to equal the sum of the R in seizes whether it be 1 or 10. The total power dissipated is constant. While all of the answers are not credible it would seem the answer 1 could be correct as the voltage drop across each individual resistor would be a function of E=IR and as I is constant each resistor’s voltage drop would be a direct result of its resistance. Did not some fellow named Kirkoff have something to say about this?
Also sorry about the error in my comment. P=I squared R. Sorry about that as I state it correctly later. Indeed voltage drop still appears to be the correct answer.

The minimum tidal range for economic feasibility of power generation may be true today, but that may change. Suggest you limit yourself to questions whose answer always remain true.
